When I meet with new clients and they're interested in implementing an email marketing strategy into their business, they always ask me what email program to use. I have worked with all three of the major email programs small businesses use including MailChimp, Constant Contact and GetResponse.
I wanted to dig deeper into the programs to see the overlap in services each program provides and the differences in the programs, to enable you to make a more educated decision on the type of email program to pick for your business.
What I discovered is each of these programs have many common components of their service, however, the biggest difference in the programs is the price. To give you an idea of the necessary services each program provides, I have created a chart for you to view the overlaps.
Noticing the biggest difference in each of these programs was price and customer support, I thought it would be important to further explain these pricing and support differences as well as some super cool features enabled in each of these unique email programs.
Constant Contact Pricing and Support
For Constant Contact, this is a completely paid for email service. It is the most expensive email program compared to MailChimp and GetResponse. Unlike MailChimp, Constant Contact provides phone support for their customers, so if you have questions on templates, list building, email scheduling etc. you will have a live person available to answer your questions. The pricing is broken down below:
0-500 list- $45/mo.
onstant Contact Extra Features
While Constant Contact is more expensive than the other email programs, it does provide you with a couple unique features the other programs don't have including processing event registration and payments, collecting donations, creating, sending and tracking customized coupons, and survey creation for customer feedback. It's sort of like PayPal, Eventbrite and SurveyMonkey all built into one program. If these features are worthwhile for your business, Constant Contact may just be the email program for you.
MailChimp Pricing and Support
The most cost-effective email program when you're first starting to build your email list is MailChimp. You can have a completely free account for up to 2,0000 email subscribers. If you want to create automated emails when a person signs up for your email list, you will pay $10 a month to have that service. Why is MailChimp inexpensive? Because they don't have phone support. If you are the type of person that can learn how to use a program through video and written tutorials, then you'll be pleased with MailChimp's service. If this learning model is difficult for you, than Constant Contact or GetResponse may be a better fit. Here is the pricing for MailChimp:
Starting Up- 0-2,000- FREE for up to 12,000 emails a month
1,000-1,500- $20/mo. unlimited emails
1,501-2,000- $25/mo. unlimited emails
2,001-2,500- $30/mo. unlimited emails
2,501-2,600- $35/mo. unlimited emails
All pricing will be the same for the Pro Marketer account plus a $199 annual fee
When you're using the "Starting Up" package, you will be able to create email campaigns, build your list and view reports of your email campaigns. Within the reports, you'll be able to see the open rates, bounce rates, people who unsubscribed, where people clicked, how many times they opened your email and the peak times of when people opened your email. For $10 a month, you will be able to create automated emails and for another $10 you can also send emails based on people's time zones. Furthermore, if you do end up going with a paid account, you will be able to send questions to MailChimp via email or you can even open up a live chat for someone to help you.
GetResponse Pricing and Support
Compared to Constant Contact, GetResponse has more competitive pricing and unique features within each package. The pricing is broken down like this:
Email- 0-1,000- $15/mo.
Pro- 1,001-5,000- $49/mo.
Max- 5,001-10,000- $165/mo.
Enterprise- 10,001-100,000+- $799/mo.
When you get their most basic package, you will be able to create customized emails, automated emails, and a basic landing page. If you are in a team setting, this may not be the best package for you, because their basic package only allows for one user to use the service. You could always share the username and password with another team member as another option to keep the price low.
For the "Pro" package, you will have the same features as the basic package, plus more advanced features for creating your landing page, three team members can use the account and a complete webinar service for up to 100 people!
Webinars on GetResponse
Did you know GetResponse is the only email program right now that will allow you to hold a webinar on its platform, do the automated emails and track the success of your webinar? If you have been thinking about delving into creating a webinar in order to get new clients and build your email list, you'll love what GetResponse has to offer.
Salesforce on GetResponse
If your company uses Salesforce, there is a way to actually integrate the software with GetResponse, so you can grow your email list even more and send highly target emails full of value to specific groups of people looking for that content. This feature is available in the "Max" package.
I won't go too much into the "Enterprise" package, because I don't want to confuse those of you who haven't made it to 10,001 subscribers just yet, however, if you are curious to learn about the "Enterprise" package, please visit this site.
